Course

ESRS Masterclass E3 – Water Resources

Delivery Format

Fully online (LearnWorlds) | English + main EU languages (auto-translated)

Total Duration

~4–4.5 hours (half-day equivalent, self-paced)

Assessment

  • Module quizzes: 10 questions each, 80% pass, unlimited retakes (24h cooldown after 3rd)

  • Certificate: Auto-issued on course completion + final exam pass, valid 12 months

Quarterly Refreshers

  • Q1: Sector deep-dive (e.g. food & beverage, chemicals, textiles, mining — water hotspots)
  • Q2: Regulatory update (Water Framework Directive, EU water reuse rules, basin-level regulation)
  • Q3: Case study review (real-world E3 disclosures and water stewardship programmes)
  • Q4: Annual disclosure review (required for certificate renewal)

Important Scope Changes (July 2025 Update)

ChangeDetails
Marine resources removedMarine resources are now addressed under ESRS E4 (biodiversity) and E5 (circular economy). E3 focuses exclusively on water.
Water scope clarifiedIncludes freshwater, surface water, groundwater, seawater, produced water, and third-party water.
E3-4 now mandatoryWater consumption, withdrawals, discharges, recycled/reused, and stored water are mandatory disclosures.
High water-risk areasSeparate figures required for total consumption in high water-risk (water-stressed) areas.
Intensity metric removedWater intensity ratio has been removed from E3-4. Report absolute figures only.
E3-5 financial effectsRemoved from E3 and centralised under ESRS 2.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the revised scope of ESRS E3, including the removal of marine resources and the clarified water definitions.
  2. Develop water stewardship policies covering all water sources (freshwater, surface, ground, sea, produced, third-party) and the value chain (E3-1).
  3. Build a complete water balance: withdrawals, consumption, discharges, recycled/reused, and stored water, with separate data for high water-risk areas (E3-4).
  4. Set measurable water reduction targets with base years, milestones, and context-based considerations (E3-3).
  5. Identify water-stressed areas using recognised tools (WRI Aqueduct, WWF Water Risk Filter) and apply the high-risk area disclosure requirements (E3-4).
  6. Prepare ESRS E3 disclosure narratives and quantitative data, including the centralised financial effects under ESRS 2 (E3-5).
